We’ve just launched a free online Thermal Growth (Hot Check) calculator to help simplify one of the most overlooked steps in precision alignment.

👉 Background on the method
Why this matters
A machine that is perfectly aligned when cold can become misaligned once it reaches operating temperature.
Thermal growth causes components to expand and shift, which directly impacts coupling alignment and can lead to vibration, wear, and premature failures.
Different ways to calculate thermal growth
There are multiple approaches used in the field:
- At the feet → based on theoretical thermal expansion (material, temperature, geometry)
- At the coupling (Hot Check method) → using measured cold vs hot alignment data
- OL2R (Offline-to-Running) → the most accurate method, capturing real dynamic movement during operation
What this tool does
Using your cold and hot alignment readings, the calculator quickly determines the target coupling values needed to compensate for thermal movement.
The required correction is calculated from the difference between cold and hot positions.

The goal
Instead of aligning to zero at ambient conditions,
you align to the right target, so the machine is in alignment when running.

If you’re working with pumps, motors, compressors or any critical rotating equipment — this tool can make your alignment process faster, more consistent, and more accurate.
